About Studland and Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve

Studland and Godlingston Heath National Nature Reserve covers an area of heathland, sandy dunes, wetlands, and coastal habitats along the Dorset coast. The reserve includes Studland Bay’s extensive sandy beaches and the ancient heathlands of Godlingston, making it one of southern England's most important natural sites. The landscape features large expanses of dry heath, wet heath, acid grassland, and woodland, hosting rare and protected species such as the sand lizard, smooth snake, and Dartford warbler. The reserve is part of the larger Dorset Heaths Special Protection Area and lies within the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Historically, the area was used for military training during the 20th century, contributing to its current open landscapes. Today, visitors enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including walking along marked trails through heathland and dunes, wildlife watching, beach activities at Studland Bay, and exploring historical sites like World War II pillboxes. The reserve is also a key spot for birdwatchers, particularly in the winter months when migrating and overwintering birds visit the area. Multiple access points and well-maintained paths make it accessible to visitors of varying abilities and interests. Because of the reserve’s ecological sensitivity, conservation management includes controlled grazing and habitat restoration efforts to maintain biodiversity. Visitors often come to explore the unique combination of coastal ecosystems and heathland, making it a vital protected area with strong recreational appeal along Dorset's coast.
